I would give less if I could in ratings. We signed up with Key Bank Merchant Services ( don’t use them either, awful) they promoted Clover for our new restaurant as ease of use, reporting and integration with our payroll company. This system hasn’t worked since day 1. It has cost us thousands in manhours, aggravation and stress. We are now trying resolutions with Key Banks Northeast Regional Head to try and resolve. This was an investment nightmare from start to finish. We failed to do our due diligence and have paid the price. We will make them pay if they can’t resolve these issues
As a small business owner, who feels as if I been scammed twice already…My customers love the Clover POS and Clover Mini, they compliment it, but for processing. I would tell anyone not to go with Clover or First Data. They make running a business much harder then it already is. I don’t blame them all the way. I take some blame, but Clover – get over yourselves, you’ve already gotten so much money for equipment and also processing. Why not make a system which can be reprogammed?
Clover offers great employee controls with built in permissions control and a time clock feature for payroll. We found the permission settings will satisfy most business owners as it lets them lock down individual settings on most screens. The default time clock serves its purpose but other options are available if integration with a scheduling software is needed.
Square has several proprietary POS hardware options that are comparable to Clover. The Square Terminal is similar in its form factor and function to the Clover Flex or Clover Mini, while the dual-screen Square Register (pictured below) is more of an answer to the Clover Station. For mobile businesses, Square’s $49 contactless and chip reader can be used to accept EMV and NFC payments, such as Apple Pay.
With Clover, merchants are limited to First Data/Fiserv for credit card payment processing. Thus, all Clover systems are sold with a First Data merchant services contract. This processor, while decent, has far from the best reputation in the industry. First Data has historically had problems on the merchant services side of things, such as withheld funds, account terminations, and excessive fees. Merchants who have been burned by First Data in the past are understandably wary of First Data POS products and support.
The amount you could save on processing by switching to a competitive solution such as those available through the CardFellow marketplace could quickly exceed the initial expense of purchasing a new POS system. Alternately, you can continue to use your existing processor until you decide it’s time to purchase a new POS anyway and then switch, or you could decide if you’d be able to use a less expensive countertop terminal or smaller tablet-based system instead of purchasing another full-fledged POS.
We own a boutique where we also offer screen printing and embroidery. The clover system was sold to us as full POS system. Not the case at all. We were all excited to get started with it. It looked modern, cool, and expectations were high. When we tried to ring up our first printing order of more than 100 pieces we found our first issue. The system will not allow sales of items with a quantity of more than 100. Not a good thing when we routinely sale t-shirt orders of more than 100 shirts. We either had to make up multiple skus, which made a receipt look terribly unprofessional or make an invoice on word. Then I wanted to run a report on inventory value. Not possible. You can export a report to excel but good luck with that. My wife and I have both called customer support. We were both told that when enough people complained about the same issue, they may look into a fix. Until then, nothing would change. This was after going through multiple customer service reps who didn’t even understand what I was asking for help with. When asked if we could return the 2 POS systems we bought we were literally told “they’re yours, you bought them, do what you want with them, you could try selling them on ebay”. Needless to say, at this point, POS and Clover have a whole new meaning for us. Definitely not “Point of Sale” or “Lucky Clover”. We’re currently looking for another option, over $2000 and a lot of frustration later.
Square is probably Clover’s biggest competitor, as it is another easy-to-use, all-in-one cloud POS that can work for any type of business. Mobile, flexible, and, above all, simple, Square is an amazing all-around POS product that can work as either an entry-level POS for new businesses, or a more specialized POS for specific industries, such as food/beverage, retail, and beauty/wellness. Square also has some distinct advantages over Clover.

ShopKeep does not have as many specialty-focused features as Lightspeed or Toast (it lacks table seating and advanced inventory management functions), making it better for small specialty shops and small quick-service food operations rather than full-service restaurants or large stores. Then again, you don’t want to pay for features you won’t use anyway. And it does still have some powerful back-office features, including employee management and an email marketing integration with Mailchimp.
Closer in size and functions to a traditional countertop credit card machine, the Clover Flex offers card acceptance and a built-in printer. However, the Flex supports fewer apps, so if you need specific functions, be sure to check for app compatibility first. Weighing just 1 pound and featuring a 5″ screen, the Clover Flex is the smallest of the screen-based options.

Lightspeed is best for small to medium-sized businesses. It offers relatively advanced retail-specific functions at a very reasonable price point, starting at $69/month, with in-house flat-rate payment processing through Lightspeed Payments at 2.6% + $0.10 per transaction. However, you also have the option to integrate with an outside payment processor if you prefer.

Similar to Square, the main thing Payment Depot has going for it is its payment processing. Payment Depot offers flat-rate pricing of 2.6% + $0.10/transaction (the same rate as Square’s and Lightspeed’s). There’s an additional $10 monthly fee, but this fee comes with Payment Depot’s excellent customer support and even your own dedicated merchant account — something you don’t get with a third-party processor, such as Square or PayPal Here. Payment Depot also offers interchange-plus pricing plans as your business grows. Once you graduate to processing $10K-$25K/month, you’ll be eligible for Payment Depot’s $49/month plan with interchange-plus pricing.
We cover the features of the various systems in a comprehensive set of reviews for each product in the Clover family. No matter which Clover equipment you choose, you’ll need to sign up for a monthly software plan, which is one factor that will dictate which features you’ll be able to use. For example, advanced inventory functionality or restaurant modifier capabilities are only available with the Register plan.

Toast offers all the restaurant-centric POS features you’d expect, from seating area management to menu management. Even offering more advanced functions, such as online ordering and kiosk mode, Toast is full-fledged restaurant management software, not just a POS. It’s not the cheapest POS around — packages start at $79/month — but certainly not the most expensive, either. The core software offered at the lowest price level includes cloud-based reporting, menu management, and kitchen operations, while paid add-ons include online ordering, loyalty, and gift cards.

Avoid like the plague!!! The system itself is passable, but lacks several of the features that our salesperson assured us would be available. The main issue is the Clover Customer Service. Trying to even access your account while speaking with a CS Rep is excruciatingly difficult! We were provided our Merchant ID number, which we enter each time we call. It never works (even though we have been told it is the correct number). So they then ask you several minutes of questions to confirm your identity. I know that is for our benefit, but shouldn't be necessary each time. We have tried to change the contact email address, ("Can't help you with that"). We tried to change the business address, ("No problem.") but it still hasn't been changed. And good luck trying to get any real technical help! Sorry to rant, but we dumped this system after four months due to the extremely poor customer service and bait and switch we feel we fell for.
