Developed in 2010 as an answer to poor-quality Windows POS software, ShopKeep is another solid tablet POS for SMBs, whether you’re in retail or food service. It is especially useful for quick-service restaurants and hybrid businesses that sell some retail products and some food products. Best of all, this is the only POS system other than Clover that you can use with Clover hardware.
The offline problem is in Clover’s end and fortunately you can still take charges but when you need the servers to add their tips it cannot be done in the offline mode. Also in the offline mode if a credit card is run and is declined or is short of funds in debit account or in anyway odd the transaction is flagged to be resubmitted. You must wait 24 hours after the batch to contact your merchant services provider to obtain the number to resubmit the charge. I rarely get a decline in my customer’s cards but we had two last night while Clover was in offline mode. The charges were over $150 total. Also, last night was a busy Friday night in a seasonal restaurant so we were moving fast and didn’t notice we were in offline mode considering all other internet machines were working fine.
Support for Clover products can also be inconsistent, as payments/merchant account support varies, depending on who you buy your Clover hardware and account from. Clover is sold by thousands of different banks, merchant services providers, and other third-party vendors, almost always with a merchant account contract. Software and hardware support comes directly from First Data, which, again, has kind of a crummy reputation with merchants. Plus, its help website and videos aren’t super useful. Support for the Clover apps that extend the POS’s basic functionality is provided by the individual app developers rather than from a centralized support center.
I can tell you it definitely can be reprogrammed but they dont allow it because they want a proprietary system so sales offices will promote their system knowing that it will make it tough for that business to switch because they have to buy a new POS system. We have Clover as an option and I detest this about it because I have other customers that got a Clover from another sales office and aren’t able to reprogram it because they wont allow it. However it’s doable because if I have a business owner who sells the business it can be reprovisioned as they call it. Or if the business owner changes businesses names and location but it is done by the same sales office, so that is a lot of BS that it is security. The only security is for that sales office that the merchant will stay longer even when not happy. I hope that helps.

However, if you don’t need special features and want to ensure the lowest cost for processing, you should choose your processor first. Many processors support a range of different systems, so you’ll still have multiple POS systems to choose from.

Do NOT use this system if you can help it. There charges are absurd and the lengthy contract requires more of you than most. But you need a system so you overlook the charges and the contracts and get the Clover because of the ease of getting set up…..just know…..customer service is going to be a terrible experience that will warrant you looking online for a forum in which you can let the world know of your terrible experience. Thus leads me here today. In final, as an operating system, I suppose it is ok. The pain of needing customer service and the crazy charges should be enough to keep you away 🙂

the rep Jim Minshew in NC sells this is very nice tells you what you want to hear! POS system the basic is nothing you have to buy all the apps and pay extra monthly fees. The rep said I could try it for 60 days no fees except for the card charges. I tried for 30 days and sent it back and they gave me the hardest time to do that, transferred hundreds of times, they charged me to send it back (Jim Minshew sold it as no charge and obligation free to try). THANK GOD I TERMINATED BEFORE THE 60 DAYS). it took them 2 weeks to accept the return & I was told if they didn’t receive by the 60th day I would be charged more money). 2 months later and they are still charging my account another $75 dollars for what?? I use SQUARE and couldn’t be happier. I use what I need and the fees are plain and simple, what they say they charge and no constant debits of who knows what fees! so the 1 month I used CLOVER I made sure to limit my use CC charges, they were $1700 on customer credit card use and CLOVERS fees were a total of $221+ and I will be closing my bank account cause they keep charging my account. with SQUARE I used $1900 for Customer CC and the charged my account $53.01 you do the math!
