I have a month to month contract with my service provider and can stop using Clover with zero penalties, AND I ENCOURAGE EVERY BUSINESS TO NEGOTIATE THIS FOR THEIR CONTRACT. Granted I will never get my $1275 back for the Minis, I can’t even sell them on EBay because they are attached to my merchant service provider. But I can tell my story of why you may not want a Clover system.
Clover also offers the Clover Mini, Clover Mobile, Clover Flex and Glover Go. Each device fulfills a unique need and they all work together to provide the user a seamless point of sale experience. Though Clover Mini’s can be used as a standalone point of sale system, they are commonly used as a customer facing display for the Clover Station. The Clover Mobile is used as a mobile ordering device at brick and mortar businesses while the Clover Flex is a standalone device for service based businesses.

My main complaint is Clover customer service and the unstable platform it is based on. In the one week I have used the Clover Mini I have had to reboot the units twice and they have been off line numerous times. Reboot is not a big deal, but for a brand new machine which cost $425 each I expected reliability of the FD130 or a Verifine unit (both of which I have used. )

Shopify POS software fees start at just $29/month (that includes a hosted eCommerce website, by the way), though you’ll need to opt for the $79/month plan if you want to connect peripherals, such as a cash drawer and receipt printer. You will get most features with this plan level, including gift cards, staff PINs, register shifts, and reporting. The Shopify Payments flat-rate payment processing is included at just 2.5% at the $79/month plan level and only 2.6% for your online sales. You also have the option to integrate with an outside payment processor, though Shopify will add a 1% fee if you do that.

Montreal-based software Lightspeed was founded in 2005 and today includes several different POS products: Onsite, Retail, Restaurant, and eCommerce. For this list, I’m talking specifically about Lightspeed’s cloud POS offering for retail, Lightspeed Retail. This web-based solution runs on an iPad using the Lightspeed Retail iOS app, or on a desktop computer with a web browser, such as Chrome or Mozilla. Lightspeed has especially strong inventory features that make it well suited to specialty retail, including apparel, electronics, pet stores, vape shops, and more. It’s also easy to add an eCommerce plan, which syncs your online and offline inventories, sales, customers, etc.
Clover hardware becomes even more expensive if you lease it, which is what a lot of Clover resellers will try to get you to do. (Please don’t lease any payment processing or POS hardware.) As mentioned, Clover is always sold with a merchant account, so you can’t just go out and buy the hardware on your own (without signing a merchant services contract).
I’m in the UK, spent approx 20K on terminal hardware and god knows how much on Clover software. Bottom line was we were promised the earth by the Clover rep, the system didn’t do what we wanted and basically 2.5 years down the line we have pulled them out of our stores. Customer service is awful, would not recommend them at all. So basically I have about 16 full terminal systems in my office which are useless and fully paid for. Why can’t the internet be put onto them so you could at least give them away for families to use the tablets? The printers are useless too as the serial numbers are linked to each terminal in some way so only Clover can dedicate it to another Clover terminal under your contract. Basically it’s an environmental issue too, we end up having to pay to dispose of them, more flipping landfill.
If you require specialty features or have a particular function in mind only available with certain systems, you should choose your POS system first. However, if you don’t need special features and want to ensure the lowest cost for processing, you should choose your processor first. Many processors support a range of different systems, so you’ll still have multiple POS systems to choose from.

What Clover does not let you know when you sign up and it is in the contract is that they will charge you $25.00 charge back fee. So lets put this in perspective. You have a small sandwich shop and you have a charge back of 10.00. Clover will reverse the 10.00 charge and charge you 25.00. Wow....I don't know about you but that is a big hit...we pay .05 per transaction then the charges for MC and Visa then to be hit with a 25.00 charge back fee... When does it end. READ and ASK about the CHARGE BACK FEES! BUYER BEWARE
