Maybe you’re a former Clover user who wants to try something different. Or perhaps you are considering Clover but aren’t sure if Clover is the right POS for your business and are still weighing all your options. Whatever your reasons for looking at Clover alternatives, now is a good time to check out some of the top-rated competitors to Clover on the market. There are dozens of different POS systems on the market, but the following ones are the best alternatives to Clover, specifically.

Support for Clover products can also be inconsistent, as payments/merchant account support varies, depending on who you buy your Clover hardware and account from. Clover is sold by thousands of different banks, merchant services providers, and other third-party vendors, almost always with a merchant account contract. Software and hardware support comes directly from First Data, which, again, has kind of a crummy reputation with merchants. Plus, its help website and videos aren’t super useful. Support for the Clover apps that extend the POS’s basic functionality is provided by the individual app developers rather than from a centralized support center.
Clover Mobile states that it was specifically designed for food trucks, restaurants that offer tableside payment, mobile service professionals such as landscapers or plumbers, retailers who offer "line-busting" services or who do their own inventory scanning, and businesses that frequently process payments outside of a traditional environment, such as at tradeshows or fairs.
For receipt printing, the Clover Mobile can connect to a Bluetooth-enabled Clover Mobile printer. The Clover Mobile printer is not automatically included with the Clover Mobile, but can be purchased for add-on at any time. The printer includes a clip for attaching to aprons or clothing or can be placed flat on a table. The Clover Mobile printer is made of drop-resistant silicone.
Some credit card processors (like Heartland) can offer “non-integrated” processing with the Clover. Instead of accepting payments through the Clover POS, you’ll take cards using a connect countertop terminal. (With Heartland, an Ingenico iCT220.) Essentially, you’ll use the Clover station for your point of sale functions such as order entry and reporting, and use the countertop terminal to actually accept payments.

The one thing that underpins each of these systems is the great credit card processing service by Leaders Merchant Services. When you work with us, you get competitive rates, the best equipment, and much more, all in an easy to use merchant account package. Finally, some merchants might find Clover hardware limiting. Unlike other POS systems that run on Apple or Android devices, Clover’s proprietary hardware only works with Clover POS (with one exception, which I’ll get to shortly). That means if you buy the hardware and you end up not liking Clover, you can’t use your equipment with any other system. What’s more, your unit cannot even be reprogrammed if you want to switch to another First Data-approved merchant account. You’ll have to buy a whole new hardware bundle.
We have purchased the Clover mobile through our Suntrust bank branch and were very excited about the capabilities. It is a nice unit except for one major problem. In 6 months we have been sent 6 replacement devices because a bug causes all debit entries to be ran as credit entries. Well after the second device, I started wondering if this is some kind of procedure put into place by First Data. Their credit card rates are higher, but they sell you on the fact that all debit transactions are free. Which is great, if their equipment didn't disable debit transactions every 4 weeks. This has cost us a few hundred dollars per month on credit card fees that should have been run as debit. The equipment is cool and fast, but that debit scam is pretty sinister.
Looks aren’t everything, but depending on your industry, it could be important to have a sleek-looking POS system on the counter, as opposed to some clunky black thing that uses Windows. For example, a gym or a trendy coffee shop may find that Clover fits in very nicely with their aesthetic. Clover’s beautiful hardware looks like it could be made by Apple, though it is arguably sturdier and more professional looking than a POS system with an obvious iPad.
Square has several proprietary POS hardware options that are comparable to Clover. The Square Terminal is similar in its form factor and function to the Clover Flex or Clover Mini, while the dual-screen Square Register (pictured below) is more of an answer to the Clover Station. For mobile businesses, Square’s $49 contactless and chip reader can be used to accept EMV and NFC payments, such as Apple Pay.

Their customer service SUCKS!!!!!!! I have been put on hold for up to 30 minutes to have them get on the line and tell me I need to call a different number! Yes they can NEVER find your merchant ID number it's like you don't even exist. We are not a restaurant, and we have had to put our inventory in three different times! The little barcode scanner on the screen constantly stops working and when I tried to purchase a handheld barcode scanner just yesterday I spent the entire day on the phone, getting transferred, being put on hold, told I have to call different numbers and was finally told that they would email me the paperwork to get a scanner, and this is the best part.........they can't send the scanner until they receive my check BECAUSE THEY DONT TAKE CREDIT CARDS! What a ridiculous rinky dink operation! Run far far away from this system!
